Phil is one of the World's most widely experienced commercial balloon pilots and has flown balloons in 109 countries around the world.
For over 20 years Phil has been an Expert Witness for Crown and Coroner’s Court’s throughout the UK as well as for overseas aviation authorities in Kenya, Burma, Turkey, New Zealand and Egypt.
Geoff is currently employed as a duel rated Training Captain and examiner (TRI/TRE & IRI/IRE) flying both the Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma L and AS332 Super Puma L2 helicopters within a multi-crew environment. His duties include training pilots on the Super Puma fleet with responsibility for training programs to keep pilots current and to maintain operational standards.
Evolving from a career in airline and aircraft manufacturing management, Phil, who has been flying balloons commercially since 1971 has helped establish tourist and promotional balloon operations in Europe, Africa, South and Central America and South-East Asia. He also set up his own successful balloon rides business in the English Lake District and Ireland.
Phil was the UK's chief examiner for balloon licences for over 15 years. He was deeply involved in formulating the technical and legislative framework of ballooning in the UK and abroad in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority and other administrative bodies. He is a director of Europe's largest annual public balloon spectacle, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, and has run similar events in Ireland, South America and the Middle East.
Phil's recent projects include advising a major European travel industry group on the infrastructure and safety aspects of tourist ballooning in Egypt along with investigations in Turkey. In addition, he is now the principal UK representative for ballooning on Europe's European Air Safety Agency (EASA) helping to formulate the evolution of new ballooning regulations in 31 nations. He is also the Chairman of the British Balloon and Airship Club Flying Committee and is the principal delegate for ballooning liaison with the UK National Air Traffic Service.
